Summary

A series of earthworks of enclosures and field boundaries. Finds of medieval pottery in the area suggest that these are medieval tofts and associated fields.

31 July 1970. Ordnance Survey air photography.
Soilmarks. Tofts etc.

1970. While digging drainage ditches.
One green qlazed sherd, late 13th/14th century.
One ?pipkin handle ?16th century and possibly another, also 17th century stoneware sherd.
Also Roman grey ware rim sherd.
Informant had no idea if sherds found together or separately.
Crofts show on (S2).

A further late medieval/transitional jug handle ploughed up.

November 1998. Earthwork survey.
See (S3) describing series of ditched enclosures including tofts which are subdued and truncated but are interpreted as in part medieval tofts. Area extended to east, western area is under scrub and rough grassland which may hide some features.

Medieval unglazed: one jar rim, one bowl rim, one base, five body sherds (one large).
Late medieval/transitional: one base and two body sherds.
