Type of record:Monument
Name:Middle to Late Saxon settlement and multi-period finds

Summary

Investigations in this area during 1989 and 2017 showed this to be site of a probable Middle to Late Saxon settlement. This idea is supported by the quantity of Early Saxon, Middle Saxon and Late Saxon pottery along with objects like spindle whorls and hooked tags. Other finds from here include prehistoric worked flints; a Roman brooch and coins; a medieval mirror case; a medieval/post-medieval purse fragment; and post medieval jettons and a thimble.

Full description

1989. Fieldwalking of four areas in field, contexts 1 to 4. Location [1].
Roman, Early Saxon, Middle Saxon, Late Saxon, medieval and post medieval sherds.
Some Thetford type ware sherds are pat oxidised and oddly fired. Reburnt, or a kiln in the vicinity?
See list and plan in file.
A. Rogerson (NAU), 15 February 1990.

February to April 1991. Further gridded fieldwalking
Iron Age, Roman, Middle Saxon, Late Saxon pottery.
Late quantity of Ipswich and Thetford ware must be evidence of Middle and Late Saxon occupation. The medieval material could be from the manuring of an 'infield'.
Although some sherds are discoloured, none are particularly underfired or overfired. There is no suggestion of wasters or pottery production.
A. Rogerson (NLA), 4 June 1991
