Summary

Iron Age metalwork, Roman brooches and coins, a Middle Saxon pin, ring, and other metalwork, and medieval and post-medieval coins and metal objects, found by metal-detecting in 2009. Metal-detecting in 2010 recovered Roman, medieval and post-medieval coins, as well as Romano-British, Early Saxon, Middle Saxon, Middle Saxon/Late Saxon, medieval and post-medieval metal objects.

It is possible that the Early Saxon finds from the site represent a cemetery and that the unusual quantity of Middle Saxon material may hint at the beginning of a settlement on the site, which may or may not have been continuously occupied into the medieval period.

Early 2009. Metal-detecting.
Two Roman, one Middle Saxon, four medieval and one post-medieval coins. Middle-Late Bronze Age chisel (S2), Roman brooch, Early Saxon girdle hanger, Middle Saxon tweezers, Middle Saxon/Late Saxon silver hooked tag, Late Saxon silver finger ring, medieval buckles, strap end, harness mount, medieval/post-medieval buckle, vessel, pin, dagger, post-medieval buckle, cloth seal and undatable ring and strap end.

The Middle/Late Saxon silver hooked tag and the Late Saxon silver finger ring were both declared Treasure at inquest (Treasure cases 2009 T169 and 2009 T101 respectively). The finger ring was subsequently acquired by the British Museum (2010,8006.1) and the hooked tag by Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2010.173).
