Name:Neolithic occupation site and Iron Age settlement

Summary

Fieldwalking as part of the Fenland Survey recovered a scatter of prehistoric worked flints and pieces of prehistoric and medieval pot. A concentration of Iron Age pot and a group of Neolithic worked flints were recorded. These are indicative of occupation during these periods.

Full description

27 April 1988. Fenland fieldwalking.
Conditions: Reasonable. Young cereal, soil weathered but recently rolled.
Context 1. MTW GC.
Odd flints and medieval pottery scattered across field. One sherd of prehistoric pottery (pre Iron Age) at 7226 9520.

Flints are Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age, some gunflint.

Context 2 at TL 7244 9518. MTW 158.
Concentration of Iron Age pottery, bone, and broken burnt pebbles on gentle chalk slope down to stream on north. 35m east to west x greater than 15m north to south. Could run into field to north, but not recognised when walked some weeks previously.

Context 3 at TL 7234 9520. MTW 157.
Concentration of flints with pot boilers on gentle slope south of stream course 42m east to west x 31m north to south.

Context 3 flints alone are Neolithic.
