Summary

Fieldwalking as part of the Fenland Survey recovered a scatter of prehistoric worked flints and pieces of Roman and medieval pot. A concentration of pieces of Roman pot and building material was recorded. This may be the location of a Roman building or settlement. Metal-detecting between 2009 and 2017 recovered Roman, medieval and post-medieval coins; and Middle Bronze Age andRoman metal objects. The metal finds include a Middle Bronze Age dagger or knife; Roman brooches, including an unfinished Dolphin brooch, pendants, a nail cleaner, a furniture fitting and a stud.

Full description

11 March 1988. Fenland Fieldwalking.
Conditions: good weathered ploughsoil.
Context 1. MTW FG.
Sherds and flint collected from whole field. Roman pot over most of field, but particularly along west side; medieval pottery particularly in south sector. Stray flints over most of field.

Context 2 at TL 7330 9538. MTW 149.
Small spread of Roman pottery and a few bits of tile on a chalk ridge standing above the surrounding gravelly loam soil by about 0.6m. Ridge meanders and appears to be a natural feature. Pottery on top and north side. 36m north to south x 41m east to west.
