Name:Early Saxon cemetery and multi-period finds

Summary

Fieldwalking and metal detecting has recovered a large number of finds from this site. These include worked flints, Iron Age pottery, Roman tile and pottery, two Early Saxon brooches and medieval and post medieval pottery. This is probably part of the Early Saxon cemetery of 6th century date on Pewter Hill.

Full description

Winter 1986 to 1987. Fieldwalking along proposed line of Kirby Cane bypass. Location [1].
Good scatter of:
Worked flints including scrapers.
Fifteen sherds Iron Age flint gritted.
Roman tile including tegulae and imbrices, possibly Roman sherds.
15th to 16th century sherds.

Late 1988. Metal deteecting finds. On bypass line.
Fragment of footplate of Early Saxon brooch (Leeds BI). See (S1).
Roman T-shaped brooch, hinged late 1st- mid 2nd century.

Bronze strap-end with central ridged longitudinal bar and rows of ring and dot on either side.

Early Saxon brooch identified as cruciform brooch, possibly tinned, with sub-ovoid head knobs. Area between top of bow and base of knob corroded with ?tinning absent. Corrosion extends halfway down bow on reverse. Iron staining on front of head-plate.
