Summary

Fieldwalking along the proposed line of the Kirby Cane bypass recovered pottery dating from the Bronze Age, Iron Age, Roman, Early Saxon, Late Saxon, medieval and post medieval period. Bits of post medieval clay pipe, bone and shell were also found. Later metal detecting recovered a 1st or 2nd century AD Roman trumpet brooch.

Winter 1986 to 1987. Fieldwalking along line of proposed Kirby Cane bypass.
Odd medieval sherds scattered along proposed road line.

June to August 1988. Further finds during bypass construction. Bypass Section C.
One sherd Bronze Age, grog and sand tempered.
Two sherds Iron Age or Early Saxon, one gritty, one grog tempered.
One Roman greyware.
Four Thetford? Ware.
Thirty two medieval unglazed and four glazed.
One late medieval/transitional.
One glazed earthenware.
Six other post medieval.
Clay pipe, animal bone, oyster shell.

Bow and head trumpet brooch, not enamelled. Developed type with acanthus moulding, mid 1st to 2nd century.
