Record Details

NHER Number:21317
Type of record:Monument
Name:Possible Roman settlement and multi-period finds

Summary

Extensive fieldwalking and metal-detecting in this area has revealed the possible site of a Roman settlement. This notion is supported by the find of over one hundred Roman coins, numerous pottery sherds, brooches and bracelets. Other finds from here include a Mesolithic or Neolithic flint blade, a Late Bronze Age socketed spearhead, sherds of Iron Age pottery, Early Saxon brooches and wrist clasps, Middle and Late Saxon pottery sherds, a medieval padlock and post medieval tokens. Fieldwalking and metal-detecting since 2010 recovered probably late prehistoric worked flint, a Roman coin, Iron Age, Roman, Early to Middle Saxon, medieval and post-medieval pottery, Roman tile, medieval roof tile and post-medieval brick, aswell as Late Iron Age, Roman and medieval to post-medieval metal objects. The metal finds include Late Iron Age/Roman brooches; Roman spoon fragments and brooches; medieval to post-medieval dress accessories; a medieval harness pendant; and post-medieval spur fragments, a harness mount, knife shoulder bolster, harness mount and weight.
