Name:Site of Roman settlement and multi-period finds

Summary

This is the site of a ditched Roman settlement, discovered during a field walking survey. Roman bricks, fragments of pottery, and pieces of Roman metalwork have been found on the site. Field walking and metal detecting has also recovered prehistoric flints (including a ?Palaeolithic retouched flake), an Iron Age mount, possibly from a scabbard, and fragments of pottery dating from the Middle Saxon to the post mediveal periods.

Full description

1977-1978 and 1984. Field walking.
Ordnance Survey field Great Fransham 355.
Sizeable Roman site.
Ditches containg Roman material seen in section in land drains etc.
Much Roman pottery and brick in scatter.
Puddingstone and lava.
Medieval sherds including early medieval Ipswich ware, Thetford ware, worked flint post medieval sherds including glazed red earthenware and stoneware.

8 Roman greyware pottery sherds from area in south-west corner of field.
1 Iron Age mount, ?from scabbard.
1 Romanknob/terminal and 1 unidentified copper alloy object fragment (rather like the side of a buckle; a handle?).
