Name:Site of Late Saxon and early medieval settlement and multi-period finds

Summary

This is the site of a Late Saxon and early medieval settlement, which began to be occupied in the 11th century, and continued into the 12th century. This settlement continues under NHER 20822. Field walking and metal detecting has recovered prehistoric flints, pottery dating from the Roman to the post medieval periods, and a copper alloy stud of unknown date.

Full description

March and September 1984. Ordnance Survey field Great Fransham 179, southwest boundary is former parish boundary, not field boundary. Field walking in good conditions.
Medieval sherds including Grimston, late medieval/early post medieval, and early medieval, Thetford type and Late Thetford; one sherd Roman or Late Saxon.
Worked flints.

Stud, copper alloy, undated, no other significant finds.

This site, and NHER 20822, are recorded as LS16 and Med 60 in (S2). The settlement began to be occupied in the 11th century, and continued into the 12th century.
