Summary

Fieldwalking in 1978 and 1986, in advance of the Norwich Southern Bypass, recovered prehistoric worked flints; Roman, medieval and post-medieval pottery; Roman coins; a Roman pin and an Early Saxon small-long brooch. Metal-detecting between 1986 and 2017 also recovered Roman, medieval and post-medieval coins, a medieval jetton and post-medieval token, as well as a Middle Saxon disc brooch, part of a medieval seal matrix and a medieval/post-medieval spoon fragment and spindle whorl.

Middle Saxon disc brooch, equal-armed cross in openwork, with pellets at end of each arm; toothed outer edge; central boss; transverse single pin-lug with remains of iron pin and broken single catch-plate on reverse. Derived from Carolingian prototype.

Context 1.
Found during NARHG survey of Norwich Southern By-pass route in 1986 but not recorded on NHER in 1990; object listed in folder twice.
Early Saxon small-long brooch, lower bow and foot missing, Leeds trefoil-headed type. Surfaces are pitted and the break on the bow is ancient. Incomplete single pin bar lug on reverse (break also old).
