Record Details

NHER Number:118
Type of record:Monument
Name:Possible Saxon pottery works and medieval undercroft, 22-26 St Andrew's Street

Summary

In 1969 the arched cellar beneath the theatre was examined. The arch was of medieval date and of a simple brick form with no decorative features. Subsequent excavations here in 1970-71 recovered a variety of artefacts including Late Saxon Thetford Ware pottery sherds, early medieval pottery wares and 17th century pottery sherds in a rubbish pit. The presence of Saxon wasters suggest that a pottery works may have existed here during this period.
