Summary

Fieldwalking and metal-detecting in advance of the Norwich Southern Bypass and in 2018 recovered prehistoric burnt and worked flints and a pot boiler, a Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age scraper; Roman, medieval and post-medieval pottery sherds, a medieval roof tile; aswell as undated, Bronze Age, Roman, and Late Saxon to post-medieval metal objects. The metal finds include undated ring; a Bronze Age palstave; Roman brooches, a ferrule and finger ring; a Late Saxon brooch; medieval to post-medieval dress accessories; a medieval spur fragment, and a vessel fragment; a medieval/post-medieval box fitting; and post-medieval weights, a cloth seal,. Finger ring, furniture fitting, a piece of witing equipment and a harness mount. part of a Middle Bronze Age palstave, a fragment of a Roman enamelled brooch, medieval roof tile and medieval and post medieval metal finds. CROPMARKS OF AN UNDATED RECTANGULAR ENCLOSURE PREVIOUSLY RECORDED UNDER THIS NUMBER ARE NOW RECORDED UNDER NHER 62988.

Context 3. South part of field overlapping Context 1.
Large spoil heap from Southern Bypass had been in northeast corner of field but was now spread over the field so that it is probable that the finds have come from elsewhere.

Middle Bronze Age palstave blade (worn). See (S2).
Roman enamelled brooch fragment, square with central lozenge-shaped sunken field containing yellow enamel, and four around with white enamel.
Medieval bronze vessel rim fragment.
Medieval bronze half-barrel-shaped belt fitting decorated with niello- inlaid cross hatching.
Medieval asymetric buckle with leaf-shaped lobe projecting and engraved diagonal lines on frame.
Late medieval bronze spur rowel.
15th/16th century bronze box mount with pierced pointed lobe at one end, broken at two rivet holes.
17th century bronze S-shaped belt-fitting with swan head terminal.
16th century back plate for drawer handle.
18th century bronze signet ring with coat-of-arms and screw thread on shank at base, from tobacco tamper (cork screw and tube type).
18th century bronze dividers with moulded knob and decorated at top of arms.
