Record Details

NHER Number:11688
Type of record:Monument
Name:Possible Bronze Age ring ditches and undated enclosure and linear features

Summary

Three or possibly four ring ditches, an enclosure and linear features are visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs. The ring ditches are probably the remains of Bronze Age barrows. Medieval flax retting pits have been recorded in the area and it is possible that the linear features were associated with these.

In southeast corner of Old Covert on 6 inch Ordnance Survey map (S1) (now felled). Group of three ring ditches.

Also some rectilinear marks.
D. Edwards (NAU), July 1981.

Called Three Howes in AD 1435.
See (S2) which also states there was a flax retting pit here; could this explain the rectangular marks?
E. Rose (NLA), 26 July 1996.

19 July 1994. NLA air photography.
Two ring ditches clearly visible, northern most example extremely faint - the feature appears to get increasingly faint on more recent photos - getting destroyed gradually?
A fourth possible ring ditch may exist to the south of the group - although it may be a fungus ring.
Small rectilinear enclosure visible to west of ring ditch group.
S. Massey (NLA), 1 May 2001.

29 July 1996. NLA air photography.
Cropmarks of three ring ditches visible, and of linear features.

Cropmarks of three ring ditches visible.
Slight parching within the interior of these ditches suggests remnants of mounds still present.
S. Massey (NLA), 4 May 2001.
