Summary

This is the course of a Roman road from Billingford to Toftrees, the best preserved section of which is on Brisley Common where it is visible as an earthwork. Other sections of the road are visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs and in hedge lines.

Full description

Section of a Roman road between Billingford and Toftrees, revealed as a cropmark and by excavation on Brisley Common. The road is also visible as a hedge line.

Two flanking ditches, 18m apart, and a gravel surface, badly damaged by ploughing during World War Two.

Foundation trenches also revealed undated pits, but no finds were recovered.

Small and oblique section of road noted, comprising mixed grade angular gravel in a sandy clay matrix. No accompanying ditch observed and no finds recovered.
