Record Details

NHER Number:11007
Type of record:Monument
Name:Medieval moat and windmill mound

Summary

A large oval shaped cropmark can been seen on aerial photographs of the area. This appears to be a windmill mound. However examination of the Burston tithe map shows a possible medieval moat at the same spot. It is possible that the mound was built on the site of an earlier medieval moat.

Full description

Undated cropmark seen on Ordnance Survey air photograph. Large oval shape (NCM). Wind mill marked here on (S1). Probably the edge of the mill mound.
E. Rose (NAU), 25 September 1979.

However, (S2) shows a north to south linear pond with interesting corresponding indentation in green edge, as if once a rectangular moated site. Did windmill stand on edge of a moat? See tracing of (S2) in parish file by A. Rogerson (NLA).
E. Rose (NLA), 25 June 1992.
