Summary
Two possible Bronze Age round barrows. One of the barrows was excavated in the mid 19th century and a fragment of Roman pottery was discovered. Both barrows are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs from 1956.

Full description
Two tumuli, context 1 at 1738 0347 and context 2 at 1739 0341.
'Tumuli with Roman pottery on road from Carleton to Hethersett'.
See (S1), (S2), (S3), probably same as two mounds at Five Ways and probably modern.
September 14 1846.
From 'tumulus' (date and function uncertain), mound by Five Cross Ways, dug into from south to north by compass.
In centre was layer of clay which had evidently been disturbed before (Medieval pottery, also found animal bones, horseshoe nails, charcoal).
Dug by Sir John Boileau.
One sherd, rim of course dark grey ware, lip undercut, see file, probably Roman.

The find referred to in (S1) must predate the 1846 excavation.
E. Rose (NAU).
Context 1, 25m diameter, 2m high covered in trees and brambles. Ditch 6m wide, 30cm deep, only survives on west.
Context 2, 16m diameter, 1.2m high, covered in trees and brambles, no ditch though one in 1957.
Both scheduled as ditched barrows.

The round barrows described above are visible faintly as earthworks on aerial photographs (S6), however they become harder to see through the tree cover on photographs from 1956 onwards. The larger of the two is centred on TG 1736 0345 and measures approximately 20m in diameter, the smaller, to the south, is centred on TG1738 0342 and measures 14m in diameter.
