Record Details

NHER Number:9082
Type of record:Find Spot
Name:Possible Roman building, possible Early Saxon cemetery and multi-period finds

Summary

Fieldwalking and metaldetecting between 1960 to 2016 recovered late prehistoric worked flint, including Neolithic scrapers; undated burnt flint; prehistoric, Iron Age, Roman, Early Saxon, Late Saxon and medieval pottery sherds; Roman flue tile fragments, roof tile fragments and ceramic tesserae; an undated burnt glass fragment; an Early Saxon glass bead; Roman and medieval coins; a post-medieval jetton and undated, Bronze Age, Early Saxon and Late Saxon to post-medieval metal objects. The metal finds include undated and unidentified lead objects and metalwoking debris; a possibly Bronze Age copper alloy unidentified object; Early Saxon brooches, copper alloy tweezers, a wrist clasp and sword pommel; a Late Saxon gold finger ring; a medieval copper alloy ring, copper alloy vessel fragment, rivet and brooch; a medieval/post-medieval belt or harness stud and post-medieval buckles, book clasps, a sword-belt hanger and cloth seal.
The quantity and type of finds recovered indicates that there may have been a Roman building in the area, and later, a possible Early Saxon cemetery.
