Summary
In around 1942 a perforated stone macehead was found in a garden at Watton airfield (NHER 8908). The exact location and circumstances of its discovery remain unknown, although it may have come from within a cluster of associated residential dwellings that lay to the north of the airfield. These prehistoric objects are not closely datable, having been found in both Mesolithic and later contexts.

Full description
1942. Stray Find.
Broken stone macehead, 6.04cm (2.38in) diameter, with hour-glass perforation. According to (S1) this object was found "in a garden at aerodrome" within Watton. Original record says found in 1942, although a note stating "around 1940-46" has also been inserted. The 1942 date is probably accurate. The 'aerodrome' is almost certainly Watton airfield (NHER 8908), a World War Two military airfield that lay to the south-east of Watton (actually falling largely within the parishes of Griston and Carbrooke).
It should be noted that as no further locational information is given, the mapped extent of this record reflects only the general area in which this object may have been found (the main area of residential dwellings associated with the airfield).
These perforated stone maceheads are not closely datable, having been found in both Mesolithic and later prehistoric contexts. A further note added to (S1) suggests this item was possibly given to Blackburn Museum.
