August 1974. Listed, Grade II.
Listing Description Excerpt:
"Naval arsenal ancillary buildings. 1806. By James Wyatt. Now commercial premises. Red brick under a roof of graded Cumberland slate. One storey; five-window range. Eight bays plus a round-arched carriage entrance at east end. Two doorways under four-vaned fanlights, that to the east with a glazed and panelled door, the other 20th century...

Site examined by Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England.
Ordnance Survey documents (S3) and (S4) show that the building was divided into three rooms, the Sergeant's Room and Guard Room occupying two bays at the west end and a large Office or Barrack Room. The Barrack Block was provided with Stores, a Privy and a Cleaning Shed in a yard at the east end of the building.
When the site was acquired by Colmans, this building was remodelled and extended. A single bay was partitioned off at the west end to form an office heated by a large new fireplace, and another large room is likely to have been an office for clerks. The two end bays with double doors suggest accommodation for a vehicle, perhaps a delivery dray.
