Type of record:Monument
Name:Bronze Age round barrow, part of linear cemetery NHER 9549

Summary

A Bronze Age round barrow previously surviving as a low earthwork was subject to partial excavation prior to its levelling in advance of the construction of a playing field. It is visible as an earthwork and cropmark on aerial photographs and forms part of a linear barrow cemetery (NHER 9549) on what was once Eaton Heath. The excavations revealed the remains of a shallow coffin of organic material and sherds of Beaker pottery.

Full description

June 2010. Norfolk NMP.
A Bronze Age round barrow is visible as a low earthwork and cropmark on aerial photographs (S1)-(S5), centred at TG 2116 0602. It forms part of a linear round barrow cemetery, NHER 9549, under which record all previous information concerning the site is held (the barrow was formerly recorded as context 3). Excavations at the site in 1969-70 revealed the remains of a shallow coffin of organic material and sherds of possibly Beaker pottery (NHER 9549; (S6)). As mapped by the NMP the barrow comprises a circular ring ditch measuring 35m in diameter, separated by a substantial berm from a second ring ditch and a mound measuring approximately 16m in diameter. The small size of the mound is in contrast with the findings of the exaction (S6), but the barrow seems to occupy a small knoll and is difficult to distinguish precisely from this topographic feature. In addition, the site is overlain by the remains of World War Two anti-landing trenches (NHER 53254), confusing what is visible on the photographs (and, presumably, what was revealed by the excavations).
S. Tremlett (NMP), 23 June 2010.
