Record Details

NHER Number:550
Type of record:Monument
Name:Roman cremation burials

Summary

In 1950 some construction work on a tennis court in this area disturbed at least two cremated burials. These included pottery, coins, a bead, mirror, pin and brooch that dated the burial to around AD 70. It is possible that at least one of these burials may be in a local pre-Roman tradition, and a Bronze Age scraper was also found on this site.

1951.
Further excavation revealed nothing more, but excavation by T. Mck. Clough (NAU) in November 1969 produced shouldered jar buried upside down with few more cremated bone fragments, part of bronze brooch, pin surviving.
These found about 1.8m-3.6m (6ft-12ft) west of earlier find.
See reference (S2).

1969.
Another sherd by Burial II. Possibly local Iron Age tradition. Mirror case had traces of Pompeian red paint. Charred condition suggests placed on bones while still hot.

Reference (S3) adds a Bronze Age scraper to 1950 finds.
