Full description

March 2007. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of a group of undated and multi-period ditches, representing enclosures and former field boundaries, some of which may be Roman in date, are visible on aerial photographs to the north of Sutton Hall, Sutton (S1-S3). The site is centred on TG 3926 2466.

The site consists of a dispersed group of fragmentary ditches, the majority of which appear to form former field boundaries and, where double ditched, trackways. Some of these ditches may have defined enclosures. Two possible enclosures may be visible, one rectangular example at TG 3926 2475, measuring approximately 60m by 45m (S3) and another at TG 3942 2448, measuring at least 75m by 45m, and with a possible double ditched boundary (S1).

The majority of the ditches mapped are roughly aligned either northwest to southeast or northeast to southwest and are likely to be the fragmentary remains of field boundaries of possible Roman date. Fieldwalking and metal detecting within the western part of this site in advance of the Bacton to Great Yarmouth pipeline produced Roman date pottery (NHER 33986). Similarly aligned field boundaries have been recorded nearby (NHER 49314 and 49329-30), some of which are also associated with Roman finds (NHER 49330).
S. Massey (NMP), 30 March 2007.
