Full description

June 2005. Norfolk NMP.
A cropmark of an incomplete possible ring ditch of a Bronze Age round barrow is visible on aerial photographs (S1). This cropmark is located at TG 5053 1194. The cropmark is sub-circular in plan with an external diameter of up to 23m. A 9m wide gap is present in the ditch on the south side, possibly forming a deliberate entrance. The ditch is of uneven width, varying from 4.5m on the west side to 2m on the east. The maximum internal diameter of the ring ditch is 17m. It is situated close to the top of a northwest facing slope overlooking the valley of the Pickerill Holme stream at a height of 15m OD. A second ring ditch cropmark is located further down the slope, 100m to the north (NHER 12187) and a small hengiform ring ditch lies 200m to the southwest (NHER 27381). The ring ditch at this site forms part of a larger group of eight ring ditches located around a headland between the lower Bure valley to the south and the smaller Pickerill Holme valley to the west (see NHER 27547, 27548, 27377, 12187, 27381, 27395). The ring ditches in this group are positioned around the sides rather than on top of the headland and lie at a height of between 10m and 15m OD.
J. Albone (NMP), 9 June 2005.
