In 1887 a Mesolithic flint tranchet axehead was found at Carrow Works. This was found within peat at a considerable depth below the surface.

Full description

February 1887. Stray find.
Found at Carrow works:
1 Mesolithic pick. 10" [25cm] long. Donated to Norwich Castle Museum by R. J. Colman in 1919 (NWHCM : 1919.3). Information from (S1). See photograph in file (S2).
Exhibited at a meeting of the Prehistoric Society of East Anglia on 11 March 1919, when it was described as having been found "20 ft. below the floor level of the sawmill at Carrow, beneath peat, in February 1887" (S3).
This implement is listed as listed as as a heavy tranchet axehead in (S4) and is described in detail in (S5) (in which it is also listed as a tranchet axehead).

The location of this discovery has been corrected to TG 2450 0751, where a sawmill is clearly marked on the 1st edition OS map (record previously centred at TG 2407 0758).
