Record Details

NHER Number:41010
Type of record:Monument
Name:Site of a Roman settlement and multi-period finds

Summary

Metal-detecting between 2004 and 2019 recovered an undated lava quern fragment, Palaeolithic flint implements and late prehistoric worked flints including an Early Neolithic flint scraper, a Neolithic blade, Neolithic/Bronze Age retouched flakes and Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age flint scrapers; Iron Age, Roman and Middle Saxon to post-medieval pottery sherds; Roman tegulae, roof tile, flue tile and medieval to post-medieval roof tile fragments; Roman tessera; Roman, medieval and post-medieval coins; a medieval jetton; a post-medieval token and Iron Age to Roman and Late Saxon to post-medieval metal objects. The metal finds include an Iron Age or Roman terret; Roman brooches, bracelet fragment, finger ring, furniture fitting, metal working debris, nail, spearhead, steelyard weight and fragment of a copper alloy rod thought to be related to Roman 'barbarous radiate' coin manufacture; a Late Saxon strap-end; medieval to post-medieval dress accessories; medieval weights, brooch, harness mounts, harness pendants and a purse fragment; medieval/post-medieval copper alloy vessel fragments, a copper alloy vessel repair, purse frame, copper alloy ring, cloth seal, rumbler bell and lead weights and post-medieval crotal bells, a Jew's harp, harness mount, powder flask, steelyard weight, thimble and musket ball.
The quantity and type of finds recovered suggest that is was the site of a small Roman settlement.
Field boundaries and at least one possible trackway, of unknown date, are visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs. They appear to represent more than one phase of activity, and may date from the Iron Age to Roman period, as they appear very similar to co-axial field systems identified elsewhere in this part of Norfolk (see NHER 6096, 21271 and 49400). These features appear to continue into fields to the north and west (NHER 13011).

March 2009. Aerial photograph interpretation.
A series of linear cropmarks, representing field boundaries and possibly a trackway, are visible on aerial photographs (S1), centred on TG 4378 1111. More than one phase of activity appears to be represented, but the elements of the site which have a northwest-southeast and northeast-southwest orientation may be associated with the Roman period settlement and Late Saxon metalworking site (principally recorded under NHER 41010). These features may also be related to the land division recorded as NHER 13011 to the north west. A possible trackway which appears to belong to this postulated phase of activity may lead towards the settlement and metalworking site, and appears to be a continuation of that visible to the north west. These linear cropmarks appear to continue in fields to the south and east, and appear to represent part of a larger landscape of Late Iron Age/Roman activity in this area.
