Name:Possible site of Custhorpe deserted medieval village

Summary

This is the alleged site of Custhorpe deserted medieval village. This settlement was mentioned in the Domesday Book but its exact location within Westacre parish is unknown. Extensive metal detecting and fieldwalking in this area during 1983-98 recovered a huge number of metal objects including two hundred and eleven medieval and post medieval coins, tokens and jettons. Other finds included Early Saxon wrist clasps, Roman brooches, various Neolithic flint implements and a medieval pilgrim badge.

Alleged site of deserted village - doubtful.
1983. Medieval sherd found.
1985. Found with metal detector. Early Saxon wrist clasp (S2), Roman, medieval and post medieval coins, Late Saxon and medieval (S3) metalwork, Early Saxon sherds and loomweight.
1987. Found with metal detector. Roman brooch, medieval-post medieval metalwork.
1988. Found with metal detector. Early Saxon wrist clasp (S4), Middle Saxon metalwork and coin, medieval metalwork.
1992. Metal detector finds. Medieval and post medieval finds, including coin.
1993. Metal detector finds. Roman, medieval, post medieval metalwork and coins.
1994. Medieval coins, early Neolithic flints.
1995. Medieval pilgrim badge.
1996. Fieldwalking. Flints. Early Saxon, medieval sherds.
