Full description

Moated site at Bale known as The Carr.

1961 and 1965.
12th to 13th century sherds picked up inside the moat by [1], who retains them, (S6).

June 1973. Visited by A. Rogerson (NAU)
Moat rectangular with external bank on east side.
1 sherd of Grimston type green galzed ware found on interior.

(S1) suggests that wood to east banked but not ditched, is an outer enclosure or drained pond; but name The Carr suggests only a carr.
(S2) in church shows moat as it is now, no wood or extensions to east.
(S3) shows the wood but moat is still the same.
E. Rose (NAU)

10 October 1985.
[2] found glazed Grimston sherd on inner lip west arm, 4 sherds medieval unglazed on north lip south arm (all identified by A. Rogerson (NAU)) and 'Neck and large flat sherd' (not seen) on south lip north arm. His sketch shows central north to south division of island.
E. Rose (NAU) 11 November 1985.

Survey in (S4) includes mounds in The Carr to east, notes remains of wall of flint on inner edge west arm and in moat, and records finding of 2 sherds of grey ware and 'occupational debris'.
E. Rose (NAU) 10 November 1986.

Masonry visible revetting the west end of the platform.
H. Paterson (A&E), 15 April 1993.

March 2010.
Section 17 management agreement renewed.
See (S5).
D. Robertson (NLA), 11 August 2010.
