Name:Roman horseshoes and medieval strap end

Summary

In 1968 a scatter of Roman pottery and two iron horseshoes were recovered from this location. Another piece of Roman pottery was discovered at this site in 1995, and metal detecting here in 2000 retrieved a medieval strap end with tiny pointed knop.

Full description

1968. Surface scatter.
Roman pottery including Samian and colour-coated ware and ironwork including two horseshoes.
Finds held by NCM

One jar rim, coarse clay grey fabric, probably Roman.

Before 16 March 2000. Metal detecting.
Medieval strap end with tiny pointed knop. Two sheets with rivet near each end. Opening for strap only about quarter of the length. Straight-ended 4mm long zone of rocker-arm ornament on one face next to attachment edge. Total length 46mm. Width tapering from 7mm to 6mm. 14th century.
