Name:Denton deserted medieval settlement

Summary

This is the site of the deserted medieval settlement of Denton, and a medieval moated site. Newgate House, shown on a map of 1588, is now visible as a low earthwork mound, and medieval pottery and building material have been found over the site, as well as two Neolithic querns, and Roman and Late Saxon pottery. In 1987 the remains of a timber bridge, possibly of medieval date, was found in the Den Beck.

The moat formerly recorded under this number as context 1 is now listed as NHER 39250.

September 1947.
Trial holes recovered two Neolithic querns.
Early medieval sherds found over deserted village site and moat.

Site of Newgate House, shown on (S1).
Late Saxon and post medieval finds.

Medieval sherds and jettons found.

Much felling in wood, a little replanting.
Site of Newgate House still seen as rise in arable.
Thick scatter of flint/brick/carrstone/oyster shells/pottery.
Estate asked whether site could be removed from arable.
Finds late medieval roof tile, 17th century saltglaze pottery, post medieval red ware.
