Record Details

NHER Number:3488
Type of record:Monument
Name:Gatton deserted medieval settlement

Summary

This is the site of the deserted medieval settlement of Gatton, mentioned in medieval documents from the 13th to the 16th century. Linear and rectangular earthworks banks and ditches are the only visible remains of the village. In 1964 the floor of a possible Roman building was discovered and Samian ware pottery was found. Pottery dating from the Iron Age to the medieval period has been found across the site. This site is also recorded under NHER 3502.
Metal-detecting between 2010 and 2013 recovered Roman, Late Saxon and medieval coins; Late Saxon, Late Saxon/medieval and medieval pottery and Roman to post-medieval and undated metal objects. The metal finds include a fragment of Roman finger ring, cosmetic mortar, harness pendant, button and loop fastener and a brooch; an Early Saxon oval buckle frame, Small-long brooch and a detachable side knob from Cruciform brooch; an Early/Middle Saxon buckle; a Middle/Late Saxon hooked tag; a Late Saxon bridle cheek piece; medieval dress accessories, an annular brooch and a horse harness pendant; a medieval/post-medieval copper alloy vessel fragment; a post-medieval harness mount and an undated lead weight.
