Summary

Metal detecting between 1997 and 2019 recovered Lower prehistoric flakes, scrapers and a knife, and a Neolithic lithic implement; Roman, medieval and post-medieval pottery sherds, and a post-medieval tobabcco pipe; Roman, Late Saxon and medieval ot post-medieval coins, medieval and post-medieval tokens; and undated, Roman, Early Saxon, Middle Saxon, and medieval to post-medieval metal objects. The metal finds include an undated box fitting, furniture fitting, spindle whorl and weight; a Roman brooches, a bracelet, and a finger ring; Early Saxon brooches and a ring, a Middle Saxon strap fitting; a Late Saxon strap fitting, stirrup and unidentified object; medieval to post-medieval dress accessories; medieval vessel fragments, a bow brooch, furiture fitting, harness fitting, stud and an unidentified object; a medieval/post-medieval arm guard, and a post-medieval arm guard, brooch, furniture fitting, spur, and an unidentified object.

Full description

October/November 1997. Metal detecting. Context 1.
Small area in which one Roman coin (see list in file).
Bronze handle probably from a key. Small ring bow with knops top and bottom and two knops at terminals, then a slightly waisted rectangular section stem ending in a slimmer square-section part with iron corrosion. Four knops at junction of the two parts of the stem. Roman. (S1) NCM.
Terminal from post medieval (probably 17th century) spur, bronze. Small length of very slim spur side, then an oval lobe with an incised vertical line, then a centrally place figure-of-eight terminal with lots of iron corrosion.

Unusual D-shaped object identified as a furniture or box fitting and found February/March 1998 is of the same rather mysterious class of object as one from NHER 30611 West Rudham, found in May 1999 (see that entry for S.J. Ashley's references to other published examples). See also another from NHER 20399 Barton Bendish, found in 2003. 13th to 14th century in date.
