Summary

Extensive metal detecting in this area during the period 1995-2003 recovered a diverse range of multi-period metal objects and coins. Finds of note included a superb Middle Saxon strap end decorated with a fan-shaped motif, a medieval dagger quillion, a post medieval Guinea coin weight and a medieval copper alloy sword chape. The coins retrieved from the site were of Saxon, medieval and post medieval date.

Full description

Mid 1995.
Lovely Middle Saxon bronze strap end with three rivet holes at split end. Decorated with fan-shaped motif at top, rectangular field below, with symmetrical linear interlace (with ?animal head and ?foot in top corners). Below, a flat stylised animal head terminal, engraved rather than in relief. 9th century. Edges have transverse hatching. Trace of one rivet apparently iron. The whole object slightly bent into a curve. Strange longitudinal striations on reverse.
