Summary

Metal-detecting and fieldwalking between 1994 and 2019 recovered Roman, Late Saxon and medieval to post-medieval pottery sherds; medieval roof tile fragments; Roman, medieval and post-medieval coins; medieval and post-medieval jettons; medieval to post-medieval tokens and undated, Roman; Early Saxon and Late Saxon to post-medieval metal objects. The metal finds include undated copper alloy vessel fragments, lead waste and an iron nail; Roman brooches, a finger ring, stud, bracelet, and unidentified objects; Early Saxon brooches, pins and a staple; Late Saxon strap-ends, a mount and possible buckle; a Late Saxon/medieval possible mount; medieval and post-medieval dress accessories; medieval harness fittings, harness pendants, keys, seal matrices, casket binding strips, book or casket mounts, bells, a mount, harness pendant, lead disc, furniture mount, stud, possible handle, casket or shrine mount, lead pot mend, mirror case, finger ring, ferrule or dagger chape, possible chain-mail rings, scabbard chape, a harness boss and brooches, including an important 13th century gilded silver ring-brooch in the rather spectacular form of four winged dragons and a post-medieval finger ring, sword belt hanger and harness mount.

Full description

This Findspot site records objects recovered via extensive metal-detecting and fieldwalking between 1990 and 2016.
This record number was originally allocated to the site of St Mary's Chapel, Kerdiston. However, the chapel is now recorded under NHER 57957.
Cropmarks of a possible moat, a large rectangular enclosure, and post-medieval field boundaries are now recorded under NHER 62915.

January to February 1990. Post medieval material not included.
Pottery including fresh sherds. Six Roman grey, one Roman oxidised, one Oxfordshire mortarium, one ?Thetford-type body-sherd, five medieval unglazed, one glazed Grimston, two late medieval/ Transitional, four fragments medieval roofing tile (two glazed).
Pottery in NCM.
Metalwork: (Identified by S. Margeson NCM). Copper alloy ring brooch with plain ring and pin of copper alloy strip looped over, 14th century.
Late Saxon or medieval strip, curved, with ring-and-dot decoration, ? Mount.
Gilt mount in semi-relief, openwork with animal head and fleur-de-lis. Broken, ?12th century.
Ring brooch, decoration and fleur-de-lis with hatched ground. Pin looped through hole in ring, 13th-14th century.
Copper alloy belt-clasp with projecting (broken) integral shank. Medieval.
Bronze strap-fitting with rectangular loop and two attached plates. Medieval.
Bronze vessel fragments.
Copper alloy gilt hooked fitting with integral shanks and attached bar, ?harness, medieval
?Medieval copper alloy suspension ring with attached strap.
Medieval copper alloy two-branched object of unknown function.
Medieval gilt copper alloy attachment studs, with H-shaped lug for pendant.
