Summary

Metal-detecting in 1995 recovered a range of multi-period metal objects. Noteworthy finds included a fragment of a Bronze Age sword blade with incised grooves running parallel to the edges, a medieval circular stud for a horse harness pendant and a very nice medieval door knocker decorated on the bar with symmetrically placed bosses. In 2011, this door knocker was re-identified from a polaroid photograph as a Roman knife handle.

Full description

April-May 1995. Metal detector finds.
Bronze Age sword blade fragment with incised grooves running parallel to edges, (S1).
Fragment of Roman bow brooch with catchplate.
Bronze circular stud with shank for horse harness pendant. H-shaped projecting lug with transverse rivet. Medieval 13th century.
Bronze key handle with iron staining, Roman?
Identified by S. Anderson (NCM).
Very nice medieval door knocker or lock-plate handle, solid bronze; curved bar with beaked terminal decorated with double row of inlaid zig-zag wire. On inside of other end, a suspension loop. Bar is decorated on three sides with symmetrically placed bosses, three on each side.
