Summary

Metal detecting in 1994 recovered a miniature Iron Age copper alloy head and Roman, medieval and post medieval coins. Also found were a medieval horse harness pendant, a lead pilgrim bottle, a seal matrix, buckles and strap end plates and post medieval tokens, jettons, a book clasp and a coin weight.

Full description

1994. Metal detecting.
Field to south and part of field north of road.
Miniature Iron Age head, (S1), grooved lines for hair, swept back in appearance. Simplified face, with dots for eyes. Bronze with iron corrosion below, from attachment to a handle? Drawn (S1).

Three Roman coins, six medieval, two post medieval coins and five post medieval tokens, two post medieval jettons.

Medieval shield-shaped harness pendant (bar with three roundels on a red ground).
Medieval lead pilgrims ampulla, 'star' on one face within hatched border and shell on other.
Medieval 13th century bronze pointed oval seal matrix with ?arrow and roundel in centre. S'IOH - RIC.
Medieval harness pendant attachment bar; central H-shaped lug, and pierced lobe terminal.
Medieval buckle, rectangular with sheet cylinder roller on pin rest and narrow plate with incurved end.
Medieval strap end plate, 1 rivet at opne end, and broken tiny trefoil terminal.
Medieval strap end plate fragment with 4 longitudinal bands containing zig-zag ornament, incurved end and broken off ?trefoil terminal.
14th century strap end buckle and pin.
13th century buckle with moulded projecting lobes and ribbed pin rest; sheet plate.
Early post medieval book clasp with ring-and-dot, linear ornament and rocker arm decoration near hook.
Square James I coin weight for a unite 1603 to 25.
