September 2008. Metal-detecting.
It was intended that a watching brief would be conducted during the construction of a haul road and temporary working area. Unfortunately this work took place without monitoring. In order to attempt to recover some information a metal-detecting survey of stockpiled topsoil and subsoil was conducted.
This work recovered a small assemblage of worked flint, pottery and metal objects. The pottery assemblage was heavily abraded and ranged in date from the Late Neolithic/ Early Bronze Age to the post-medieval period, from the 33 sherds 19 dated to the Early Iron Age. The flint assemblage was dated to the later prehistoric and included a multi platform flake and two scrapers.
The majority of the small assemblage of iron, lead and copper alloy objects removed during the metal detecting could not be dated, however, it did include a lead pot mend of possibly medieval date and a fiddle-key type horse shoe nail.
