Record Details

NHER Number:30286
Type of record:Monument
Name:Cropmarks of possible Roman settlement site

Summary

Extensive metal detecting during 1992-97 recovered a wealth of finds including numerous Roman coins and brooches along with a pin, stylus, bracelet, several rings and other metalwork. These finds would suggest this was a settlement site during the Roman period. Other objects retrieved comprised pottery multi-period pottery sherds, Early Saxon brooches and a possible post medieval mount.

19 July 1994. NLA aerial photography.
Cropmarks visible are the inner ring of the concentric ring ditch, plus two linears of the rectilinear enclosures.
An additional ring ditch may be situated to the east, straddling the field boundary. The majority of the feature is situated in grassland and therefore may be a fungal ring. However, the east arc appears to continue into the neighbouring arable crop.
S. Massey (NLA) 27 April 2001.

1997. Metal detecting.
Base of East Anglian colour coated beaker, interior filled with 6mm thick deposit of solidified molten lead.
NCM.
A. Rogerson (NLA) 30 March 2004.

November 2011.
Re-assessment of the cropmarks on aerial photographs suggests that there are at least four rectilinear enclosures present in the field to the west of a post medieval field boundary (shown on the tithe map). The enclosures appear to deliberately avoid the large double ring ditch (part of NHER 56275) presumably an extant barrow when they were constructed. The concentration of Roman finds in the area of the cropmarks indicates this was probably a Roman settlement. This may be reinforced by the conjectured presence of a Roman road to the east (NHER 55471) thought to connect the settlement at Toftrees to the Peddars Way.
K. Powell (HES). 22 November 2011.
