Name:Possible Roman millstone and waterlogged wooden stakes

Summary

In 1968 the remains of a gritted millstone were recovered from a gravel pit in this area. It may date from the Roman period. Several waterlogged wooden stakes recovered at the same time may also be Roman, perhaps part of a domestic structure, but this interpretation is very uncertain.

Full description

1968. While digging gravel 60 ft (18m) west of River Wensum at 4 to 5ft (1.2m - 1.5m) deep? In base of peat.
Grit millstone (broken) and pointed circular stakes 6 inch (15cm) diam, number and arrangement unknown, very pulpy and waterlogged ?Roman. Two fragments of upper stone and three fragments of lower stone.
