Summary

In 1948 some fragment of Roman pottery, half a quern stone, some antler and a number of bones including those of deer, dog and horse, were recovered from this area.

Full description

1948. By river (south side) near site of Bronze bowl and cauldron.
Roman pottery and fragment of rotary quern found.

2nd - 3rd century pie dish, half lower stone puddingstone quern, also Red Deer antler, ox horn, dog and horse bones.
Note the name of this area: Burgh Common.

Monitoring of groundworks, including levelling of bank. From Context 100.
At the western end of the area a small copper- alloy buckle with the word 'Paris' stamped on it was recovered. It appears to be of early modern date. Two slots were excavated from the northern face of the bank to a depth of approximately 2m. Metal detecting in the area produced an iron horseshoe of early pattern, some animal bones and a small lead fishing weight.
