Summary

Extensive metal-detecting here during the period of 1992-98 recovered a wealth of multi-period metal artefacts. Finds included a Middle Saxon/Late Saxon strap-end with finely moulded animal head terminal, a crude medieval Boy Bishop token, part of a medieval cistern and Roman brooches of the Trumpet and Dolphin type. Further metal-detecting in 2009 recovered medieval and post-medieval metal objects. Metal-detecting in 2010 recovered medieval metal objects.

December 1992. Metal-detecting. Part of field.
Four Roman, four medieval and one post-medieval coin. See lists in file.
Medieval bronze circular buckle or brooch, with ovolo sectional ring and moulded pin with collar.
Roman finger-ring, bronze, empty circular setting in bezel.
Middle Saxon/Late Saxon bronze 9th century strap end with finely moulded animal head terminal. The whole elongated. two pierced rivet holes at split end and fan-shaped field below with trefoil. Rectangular field in very long 'body' all inlaid with niello and elaborate double-scrolls of silver wire. Photographed (S1).

January 1993. Metal-detecting.
Boy Bishop token, very crude. Very stylised mitre on obverse, with possible crozier on its right. Small circle on reverse with cross and pellet in each angle. Edge damaged. No inscription. See for comparison pl.XI, Series X in (S2). This example is series X, but smaller and cruder.
Early Saxon/Middle Saxon toilet implement?; bronze strip with pierced hole at one end, broken at other. Midway expands to leaf shape, and decorated with pair engraved lines on each side.
Bronze Late Saxon triangular hooked tag, two attachment holes. Ring-and-dot decoration.
Bronze ?Late Saxon or medieval lead discoidal 'button' or brooch, cut-away decoration forms pelleted cross motif with border of raised dots and projecting triangular lobes in spandrels. Casting seam on reverse and fragment of shanks in centre.

October 1996. Metal-detecting.
Cruciform stud with integral shank with circular barrel over rove-like end. Cross is the form of four miniature D-sections phallic. All but one phallus have small roughly circular concavity on flat rear of glans.
