Summary

Extensive metal-detecting and fieldwalking from 1988-2005 has recovered Middle and Late Saxon pottery, coins and metal finds, including a hoard of silver ingots, brooches and strap ends, suggesting that this was the site of a settlement during the Middle and Late Saxon periods, along with NHER 24909. Prehistoric, Roman, Early Saxon, medieval and post-medieval pottery and metal artefacts have also been found.

December 1988 to January 1989. Metal-detecting.
Found by [1] (finder's Field 5):
3 Roman coins (1 pierced), 1 brooch and 1 pottery ink well (greyware). See drawing (S1).
4 ?Roman pottery sherds (?greyware).
1 Early to Late Saxon ?pendant and 1 animal head ?terminal.
1 Middle Saxon coin (plated forgery of an imitation of a gold solidus of Louis the Pious), 20 pottery sherds (11 sandy Ipswich, 5 pimply Ipswich and 4 pimply non-Ipswich), 2 brooches (S2) and (S12), and 2 pins.
1 Middle-Late Saxon strap end.
170 Late Saxon pottery sherds (Thetford type), 1 hooked tag and 2 mount fragments (joining), 1 box mount and 1 Viking Age silver ingot (S3).
1 ?Late Saxon lead spindle whorl.
4 Late Saxon/medieval pottery sherds (Grimston-Thetford) and 1 casket mount.
1 medieval coin, 76 pottery sherds (74 unglazed and 2 glazed Grimston), 2 strap ends, 1 ?dagger hilt, 1 knife terminal, 1 belt mount, 1 buckle, 1 casket fitting, 1 thimble, 1 pin and 1 staple.
1 medieval/post-medieval book clasp.
9 post-medieval pottery sherds (4 Glazed Red Earthenware and 5 stoneware).

2001-2002. Metal-detecting.
Found by [3].
1 undatable pewter ingot. Initially thought to be another Late Saxon silver ingot and submitted for consideration as Treasure (Treasure case 2007 T235). X-ray fluorescence analysis identified the metal as a tin alloy (pewter) and the object was therefore not eligible as Treasure. The presence of antimony suggested a date of no earlier than late 17th century, although the lead content is unusually high for this period. Possibly a mixture of recycled material and thus undatable.
