Name:Mesolithic occupation site and Middle to Late Saxon settlement

Summary

Extensive metal detecting and fieldwalking over a number of years has recovered a prolific number of Mesolithic flint implements which suggest that this site was occupied during the Mesolithic period, although the nature of that occupation is uncertain.

The site is also notable for the number of Middle and Late Saxon objects recovered, suggesting that this was the site of a settlement during the Middle and Late Saxon periods, along with NHER 25071. The Middle to Late Saxon finds include many Middle and Late Saxon pottery sherds; Middle and Late Saxon coins and a wide range of Middle Saxon, Middle-Late Saxon and Late Saxon metal objects, including brooches, strap ends, hooked tags, a suspension loop, pins, possible box mounts, spindle whirls, harness fittings and a several decorated copper alloy weights.

The other finds recovered include Neolithic, Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age and undatable prehistoric worked flints; Roman, medieval, post-medieval and undatable pottery sherds; a post-medieval wig curler; ?Early Saxon glass beads; an undatable clay possible loomweight; a gold Iron Age coin; Roman and medieval coins; medieval and post-medieval jettons and tokens and Roman to post-medieval metal objects. The metal finds include Roman brooches, cosmetic spatula, seal box lid, belt fitting, bracelet and lead steelyard weight; Early Saxon buckles, brooch, wrist clasp and girdle hanger fragments; medieval to post-medieval dress accessories; a medieval coin weight, mirror-case lids, pilgrim badge, casket mounts, folding balance, dagger/knife chape, bell and lead ceiling decoration; a ?medieval bird figurine; a medieval/post-medieval knife terminal, tailor’s thimble, book clasps, harness mount and copper alloy vessel fragment and a post-medieval lead cloth seal.
