Summary

This brick and flint butterfly-shaped building was built by Edward Maufe for Sir Henri Deterding, chairman of Royal Dutch Petroleum and Shell, in the early 20th century. Built in Arts and Crafts style most of the materials are local although some of the bricks were imported from Holland by barge and traction engine. In the gardens are two pavilions with pyramidal roofs and a small bridge. These were also designed by Maufe.

Full description

September 1987. Listed, Grade II*.
1913 by E.B. Maufe for H.W. Deterding, director of Royal Dutch Petroleum. Butterfly plan, five bays, double pile with two storeys and attic and four lower two storeyed wings one in each angle. Square knapped flint with brick dressings and vertical stripes; plain tiles. Tall chimneys. Small bricks especially imported from Holland.

The listing includes, as grade II, all the formal gardens and their buildings.

(S3) says the dates of building were actually 1905 to 1910 and that the Dutch bricks were brought by barge and then by traction engine.
