Summary

Extensive metal detecting undertaken in the period from 1987-2006 has recovered a huge diversity of metal artefacts. The most noteworthy finds include a Mesolithic or Early Neolithic flint flake, five lead weights with central holes, a medieval seal matrix with a motif of a bird holding foliage in its beak, an unusual medieval bar-mount with ring-and-dot decoration and a gilded bronze square harness pendant with central shield showing a lion quadrant and two rosettes on a blue background.

Full description

Summer-Autumn 1987. Area [1]. Surface finds, pottery restricted to this area.
One base, one sherd pimply Ipswich.
Three sherds sandy Ipswich.
Four Thetford type.
Six medieval unglazed.
One bowl rim in fabric similar to Grimston unglazed/Thetford but odd form.
Six Late medieval/Trans.
Nine glazed red earthenware.
Lava quern fragment with central hole.
Bronze crotal bell fragment.
Five lead weights with central holes; including one containing iron nail or rod. Held by NCM, previously by [2].

Middle Saxon pin, collar and broken shank, and sub-biconical head. Identified by S. Margeson (NCM) December 1993.

1994. Metal detector finds.
At location [3]. Numnular brooch fragment, with billeted border. Profile head with legend.
At location [4]. Gilded bronze square harness pendant with moulded suspension loop. Shield in centre has lion quadrant and two rosettes on blue enamel ground.

1995. Metal detector finds.
At location [5]. 13th century bronze casket mount, half-round bar and animal-head from which a lozenge-shaped plate expands with a rivet-hole and a double contoured border. Broken rear top of lozenge. Broken across rivet-hole at other end.
At location [6]. 14th century pointed oval bronze seal matrix with bird in centre and foliage in beak. * S'PL'I FIL AGNET' DEAVLA.

1996. Metal detector find.
Medieval gilded bar-mount, unusual, with bevelled edges, decoration of ring-and-dot and a small circular punch and two very long and stout bent over attachment shanks on reverse.
