Name:Possible Roman settlement and multi-period finds

Summary

Fieldwalking and metal-detecting between 1982 and 2013 recovered ?Mesolithic flint blades and a number of later prehistoric worked flints, including scrapers and retouched flakes; Roman, medieval and post-medieval pottery sherds; Roman building material; post-medieval clay tobacco pipe fragments; a fragment of undated lava quern stone; Iron Age, Roman, medieval and post-medieval coins; a post-medieval jetton and Iron Age to post-medieval metal objects. The metal finds include an Iron Age pin and enamelled shield boss; Roman tweezers, brooches, a bell, weight, furniture fitting, steelyard weight and bracelet fragments; an Early Saxon bell, brooch, pendant, pair of tweezers and a rare 6th century gold bracelet; an Early/Middle Saxon mount; a Late Saxon unidentified object; medieval and post-medieval dress accessories; a medieval harness pendant, copper alloy ring, spindle whorl and thimble; a medieval/post-medieval copper alloy vessel fragment and post-medieval crotal bells, a cloth seal, musket ball, thimble, hammer and spur fragment. The find scatter suggest that there was probably a Roman settlement on the site.

1982 to 1985. Fieldwalking and metal-detecting.
Context 2 at [1]:
Roman bronze decorated hammer, (S3).
Context 3 at [2]:
Iron Age Iceni gold quarter stater (Mack 404).
Context 4 at [3]:
Roman bronze curved cosmetic palette (S1).
Context 5 at [4]:
Medieval copper alloy buckle (S1) and medieval sherd. Early Saxon half head of cruciform brooch developed Aberg group I. Early Saxon pendant with two holes - Roman coin? With punched decoration.
Context 6 at [5]:
Roman head and part bow of Langton Down brooch.
Roman/Early Saxon hemispherical bronze bell.
Early Saxon animal head foot of cruciform brooch, nostrils large but plain probably group II. Early Saxon head plate and bow of small long brooch. See (S10) for further information.

Finds now held by Norwich Castle Museum (NCM 378.985), except Iron Age coin (BM (CM)).
Identified by E.B. Green (NCM), except for coin pendant which was identified by Susan Youngs (BM).

One scatter of Roman sherds - bowl and mortaria rims - and medieval to post medieval sherds all over field (Roman sherds drawn and described in (S2)).
Also: Twenty four Roman coins, various post medieval coins (ditto as above).
Post medieval buckles.
Medieval purse frame. (Full details in (S2)).
These finds now NCM 378.985 as per cat.

Late Iron Age decorative boss, early to mid 1st century AD. Traces of red enamel survive in open work. Bronze pin if it survived at all, probably went through boss holding it to top of e.g. a sword pommel, (S11 and S12).

7 medieval pottery sherds and suspension ring or brooch or buckle.
?Medieval lead weight and copper alloy stud.
1 post-medieval pottery sherd (Frechen stoneware), 1 buckle, 1 sword belt fitting (17th century) and 1 clay pipe stem.
17 undatable iron slag fragments.
These finds are part of a collection of material from this site that was subsequently given to the Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 1999.323.8.2).

The Roman bronze decorated hammer, (S3), recovered during fieldwalking and metal-detecting in 1982 to 1985, Context 2 has been reidentified as post-medieval in date.
