Summary

Metal-detecting and fieldwalking between 1985 and 2019 has recovered prehistoric worked flints, including a Neolithic/Bronze Age scraper; ?Iron Age, Roman, Early/Middle Saxon, Late Saxon, medieval, medieval/post-medieval, post-medieval and post-medieval/modern pottery sherds; medieval to post-medieval brick and tile fragments; Roman and medieval to post-medieval coins; medieval and post-medieval jettons; post-medieval tokens and undated and Roman to post-medieval metal objects. The metal finds include undated metalworking debris and casting waste; Roman brooches, a bracelet fragment, copper alloy vessel fragment and anthropomorphic unidentified object; Early Saxon brooches, wrist clasps and a girdle hanger fragment; a Middle Saxon pin; a Middle/Late Saxon ?Carolingian mount; a Late Saxon finger ring; Late Saxon to post-medieval lead weight; medieval to post-medieval dress accessories; medieval harness mounts, harness pendants, a rivet, annular brooch, rotary key, binding strip, book clasp fragment, lead pot mend, copper alloy possible mortar, knife end-cap and copper alloy vessel fragments; medieval/post-medieval lead weights, copper alloy vessel fragments, copper alloy rings, a thimble, mount, copper alloy vessel repair, "paper-clip" rivet, candlestick fragment and crotal bell and post-medieval clapper bell fragments, crotal bells, furniture handle escutcheons, lead weights, cloth seals, harness mounts, spur fragments, sword belt fittings, a spoon, coin weight, book clasp, rotary key, copper alloy weight, possible scissors handle and probable ferrule.
The large number of Early Saxon objects has led to the suggestion that this may be the location of an Early Saxon inhumation cemetery, but trial trenching here in 2012 (see NHER 58840) did not reveal any archaeological features of this period.

March-April 2011. Fieldwalking. Field 6.
A wide range of finds dating from the Neolithic to the post medieval period were recovered during a systematic field survey which covered eight fields on the northern and eastern edge of Hethersett.
The flint assemblage from this field has been broadly dated to the Neolithic to Early Bronze Age and includes 72 flakes, 5 blades, and 2 end scrapers. Activity in the later Prehistoric period is also indicated by a sherd of Bronze Age or Iron Age pottery (possibly Middle to Late Iron Age).
Evidence for Roman activity was limited to two sherds of possible 2nd to 3rd century pottery. Similarly, only one sherd of Early or Middle Saxon pottery and two sherds of Late Saxon pottery were recovered.
Only a small quantity of medieval pottery and medieval to post-medieval roof tile, floor or wall tile, and brick was recovered. The pottery primarily consisted of medieval sandy ware and was concentrated in the southern portion of the field, similar to the field to the east (NHER 58841).
A moderate quantity of post-medieval pottery was identified, including an unusually high proportion of 17th to early 19th century high-status wares that could indicate night-soiling from Norwich or a nearby inn. This area also contained much fewer 17th to 19th century clay pipe fragments than surrounding fields and a low to moderate scatter of 19th century pottery.
Metal-detecting yielded a small quantity of objects in the majority of the studied fields, but very few in this field. These have not been reported in detail, but generally consisted of typical post-medieval to modern night soiling and agricultural debris.
See report (S2) for further information.
