Name:Site of Roman and Middle Saxon settlement and multi-period finds

Summary

This is the site of a Roman settlement identified during fieldwalking. The site may also have been occupied during the Middle Saxon period. Prehistoric flints, Neolithic or Bronze Age pottery, Roman pottery and tile, Middle Saxon, medieval and post medieval pottery and post medieval tiles have been found on the site.

Full description

17 & 24 March 1985. Hales site 161. Fieldwalking on rather sandy boulder clay, ploughed, surface reasonably weathered - conditions fair. To south, seen when cultivated and rolled (see file plan).
Context 1 = general scatter 2 worked flints.
6 probably all Roman greyware.
1 medieval unglazed.
6 post medieval.
Context 2 (site 161a) at 3683 9828. Concentration, some inequalities - roughly west-northwest to east-southeast ridges noted. General slope to south from crown of rise.
114 Roman greyware, 2 Roman oxidised.
6 worked flints.
1 sherd Neolithic/Bronze Age.
22 medieval unglazed, 4 medieval glazed.
3 late medieval/Trans.
46 post medieval and few 18th-19th century.
3 post medieval tiles.
1 malting kiln tile.
1 vitrified tile probably Roman.
1 rim non-Ipswich Middle Saxon pimply.
1 rim non-Ipswich Middle Saxon ginger jar harsh pimply.
