Name:Multi-period finds from 'Back of Elsie's'

Summary

Fragments of pottery dating from the Roman to the post-medieval periods, medieval bricks, post-medieval roof tiles and fragments of lava quern have been collected since the 1980s. Prehistoric flint flakes and undatable metalworking debris have also been recovered.

Full description

Pre 1985. Arable field. Site included in large scatter NHER 25954.
Large sherds of medieval and post-medieval pottery.
2 rims Thetford type ware.
Finders are still collecting.
Site not visited by A. Rogerson (NAU) but material seen.

Further finds between 1986 to 1987. Field now known as 'Back of Elsie's' or 'Between the cottages'.
2 Roman greyware.
1 rim pimply Ipswich and 1 bodysherd.
10 Thetford, mostly Grimston Thetford.
69 medieval unglazed.
63 glazed Grimston.
1 sherd Scarborough Ware, blob decoration.
74 post medieval mostly glazed red earthenware.

One bodysherd pimply Ipswich, 1 bodysherd probably Thetford type, 2 glazed Grimston, 1 late medieval/early post medieval, 2 glazed red earthenware.

Large lump of lava quern with adherent mortar.

Between the cottages.
Lump of very highly fired rather coarsely made brick, sanded on 2 faces.
Probably medieval.
