Summary

Extensive metal detecting at this site during 1985-98 recovered a variety of objects, including Mesolithic and Neolithic flints, a Bronze Age ingot, Roman brooches, a Middle Saxon gold coin, a medieval harness, an Early Saxon brooch made into a belt mount and a Neolithic polished flint axe. Fieldwalking here in 1996 also retrieved sherds of Roman and medieval pottery along with a prehistoric flint knife.

Full description

March and December 1985. Fieldwalking and metal-detecting.
Various finds recovered from [1] and [2]:
8 ?Mesolithic flint blades.
1 late prehistoric gritted pottery sherd.
4 Neolithic flints, including 3 scrapers and 1 (?unfinished) crude pick.
2 Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age plano-convex knives ('slug knives').
36 other worked flint, mostly of probable Neolithic date, including some flakes with unspecialised retouch.
1 ?Bronze Age small copper alloy ingot (S1), (S2).
2 Middle Bronze Age palstave fragments (S1), (S2).
1 Late Iron Age coin (S1).
53 Roman coins and 8 other metal objects including 2 brooch (1 rear hook, 1 2nd century enamelled plate) (S1), 1 copper alloy bracelet (S1), 1 copper alloy finger ring (S1), 2 copper alloy ear rings (S1), 1 pin fragment (S1) and 1 very fine toilet implement with scoop at one end and pointed nail clear at the other.
21 Roman pottery sherds, including greyware and Nar Valley sherds.
1 Roman or medieval pottery sherd.
1 Early Saxon cruciform brooch side knob (S1), (S3).
1 Early Saxon loomweight (fragmentary).
5 ?Early Saxon pottery sherds, including dish or lid rim.
2 ?Late Saxon metal objects, including 1 hooked tag (S1) and 1 lead disc brooch (S4).
1 Late Saxon Thetford-type ware pottery sherd.
1 medieval or early cruciform fitting (S1).
3 medieval coins and 3 other metal objects, including 1 buckle, 1 casket handle (S1) and 1 belt mount (S1).
36 medieval pottery sherds, including 21 unglazed, 1 ?glazed and 14 glazed Grimston.
1 medieval/post-medieval copper alloy casket fragment (S1).
1 post-medieval jetton, 1 token and 1 lead cloth seal.
Identified by A. Rogerson (NAU) and T. Gregory (NAU). See lists in file. Flints, pottery and Early Saxon loomweight held by Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 1986.77). These discoveries were reported in (S5).
